Civil War Weekend Set!

The 10th PA Volunteer Reserves return to the Old Stone House March 31 and April 1 for a Civil War reenactment on the grounds of the Old Stone House! A fan favorite, Civil War Weekend includes skirmishes and battle sequences and a showcase of the day to day operations of soldiers and civilians during the pivotal Civil War era. Encampments are open to the public Saturday March 31 from 10am-5pm and Sunday April 1 from 10am-4pm. Admission to this event is free, however, donations are encouraged!

Ghost Hunting Returns!

Last summer we ran a wildly successful pilot program for ghost hunting at the Old Stone House. We teamed up with the local non-profit group, The Center for Paranormal Study and Investigation, to bring in members of the public who were interested in learning the skills and equipment used in paranormal investigating, or ghost hunting. We had such a great time that we’ve brought the program back for Summer 2012, with a whole new set of dates (listed below)! Tickets are $15 per person and are non-refundable. Investigations will run from 8:30pm-11:30pm, but if you want a tour of the house before then, please show up by 8:00pm! The investigation will begin promptly at 8:30pm and as a courtesy to other guests, we will not wait for you! The evening will be spent using the latest technologies and equipment investigating the Old Stone House. History, Hiking, and Cherry Pie! Oh My!

A winter favorite returns to the Old Stone House on Saturday February 25, 2012 with the Cherry Pie Hike. The result of collaboration between the Butler Chapter of the North Country Trail, Slippery Rock University, Jennings Environmental Center, and the North Country Brewing Company, the Cherry Pie hike celebrates George Washington’s 1753 travels through Butler County.

Cherry pie and light refreshments will be served at the beginning of each start time (9am, 11am, or 1pm), followed by a talk by Old Stone House Curator and Slippery Rock History Professor, Aaron Cowan. After that, hikers will be led on a hike of the north Country trail by a ranger from Jennings.

OSH to Spice up Fall Programming

We’re adding a new experience for visitors to our November calendar with Candlelit Tours! Guests will enjoy the charm of the 1822 Inn lit only in firelight. Tours will be led by an interpreter playing the role of Innkeeper John Brown. After touring the house, guests can gather for light, seasonal refreshments and social merriment in the Tavern Room.

Candlelit tours will be offered Friday November 11, Friday November 18, and Friday November 25. Each tour begins at 8pm. The cost is $5 per person. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling Jen at 724-738-4964 or emailing oldstonehouse@sru.edu.

“Spooky Stories” Program Is Back Oct 27 & 28

The Old Stone House will once again host its “Spooky Stories” Halloween festivities this fall, with plenty of thrills and chills for visitors of all ages. This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday October 27, 2011 and Friday October 28, 2011 from 5:00-8:00 pm.

The Old Stone House will offer interactive storytelling, historical reenactments, and paranormal investigation – also known as “ghost-hunting.” A “Haunted Trail” behind the house will feature a frightening walk through the woods of the Old Stone House.

On Friday, the “Spooky Stories” program will host its second annual costume contest! Judging will take place outside the snack shack at 7:00 pm. Prizes will be awarded to 1^st and 2^nd place costumes. Last year, kids of all ages paraded the Old Stone House grounds in costume, showcasing their creativity!

Concessions will be provided by SRU history students for a nominal price.

Old Stone House Programs Sell Out!

For the 2011 season, the Old Stone House spruced up its programming by adding Early American Cooking Classes and Ghost Investigations to its resume. The Early American Cooking Classes, taught by Tavern Chefs Stan Malecki and Bill McGary, focus on historic cookery where students gain hands on skills making tasty recipes from the frontier days using dutch oven techniques. The Stone House partnered with the Center for Paranormal Study and Investigation to offer ghost hunting sessions at the Old Stone House. Both programs have been a wild success, selling out for the season within just a few weeks! Ghost Hunting!!

We’re partnering with the Center for Paranormal Study and Investigation to offer public ghost investigations at the Stone House this summer! If you’ve ever been curious about ghost hunting or want to know what goes on at the Old Stone House after dark, now’s your chance! Starting June 3, 2011, CPSI and the Old Stone House will host a public investigation on the first Friday of the month lasting from 8:30pm-11:30pm through October. The cost is $10 per person.
